Valve Stem Packing

Description and Application

Packing Style 2235 is composed of layers of flexible graphite tape plied into compact strands; each filament is reinforced with an Inconel® wire jacket. The strands are then square braided to form a dense yet malleable packing. Additionally, it is also impregnated with a minimal amount of lubricating agents to reduce stem friction.

Style 2235 is self-lubricating, non-hardening, dimensionally stable and resistant t well as heat, pressure and chemicals. The Inconel® filament jacket affords mechanical stability and extrusion proof, while the advanced construction provides leakage control and high integrity in steam service.

Due to it's physical properties and ability to minimize friction, 2235 is ideal for valves and broad range of applications. It is well suited for power plants, refineries, petrochemical in processing as well as sealing applications in steam at high pressure and temperature.

Fire Test

Objective

Qualify packing Style 2235 for fire resistance when applied to valves subjected to direct flame.

Test Procedure

API STANDARD 589 – SECOND EDITION

Conclusion

Packing 2235 has successfully completed the test easily reaching the requirements of this standard.

Fugitive Emissions Test

Objective

Qualify packing style 2235 for fugitive emissions in valves when subjected to thermal and mechanical cycles. Leak detection method "EPA method 21".

Test Parameters

5000 mechanical cycles, with a maximum of 3 adjustments. 10 thermal cycles at room temperature and up to 260°C. Leak measurements performed before and after each thermal cycle and every 100 cycles of the stem. Test pressure: 600 psi (42 kgf / cm2).

Conclusion

Packing 2235 has successfully completed the test with one single adjustment during the 5,000 cycles while maintaining maximum leakage under 500 PPMv, as the graph on the right shows.
